Re-Green While Recycling, June 9, 2012A Flowers for Charity swap will take place in Bay St. Louis during the June 8th Second Saturday event at the Bay Saint Louis Depot located at 1928 Depot Way facing Blaize Ave. County and nearby residents along with local community groups and organizations are invited to the green space at the Depot beginning at 8:00 AM to exchange crushed aluminum drink cans and/or labeled food cans for a variety of planting material (flower bulbs, etc.). These might include summer flowering bulbs such as Dahlias, Cannas, Gladiolus, Lilies and Caladiums along with Elephant Ears, and Ferns. Most items will NOT be bagged and people should be prepared with their own carrying bags (shopping, garbage, re-cycling, etc.). The bulbs or equivalent material will be exchanged on a first come, first served basis and will continue until 4:00 PM while supplies last. Proceeds from the sale of aluminum cans will be donated to charity. The canned food products will be turned over to the Hancock County Food Pantry. Food other than labeled cans cannot be handled during this event. Cash donations for bulbs, etc., will be accepted from those unable to furnish recyclable aluminum cans or food cans.

Gaining Ground 2013 Sustainable Living ConferenceGaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi will be hosting their 4th Annual Sustainable Living Conference and 2013 Food Summit in Oxford, MS on March 1-3, 2013. Friday's sessions will be held at the Powerhouse and will focus on how to get healthy food to Mississippians from the field to the table. Saturday is full of hands-on and instructional sessions to be held at First United Methodist Church. Mississippi State Capitol - 7The Mississippi Recycling Coalition invites you to join us on Thursday, January 10, 2013, from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the State Capitol for our 2nd Annual Recycling Awareness Day with our State Legislature. MRC will be sponsoring a breakfast for Legislators and staff in the 1st Floor Rotunda that morning. We will also use this opportunity to provide information to and network with our Legislators on the significant economic impacts that the recycling industry brings to our state. We hosted our inaugural event last April at the Capitol, more than 30 MRC members and approximately 200 State Legislators and staff attended.

America Recycles Day a Success

Sammy SoilThe Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the Mississippi Recycling Coalition (MRC), and others sponsored the first America Recycles Day (ARD) event held in Smith Park on November 15, 2012.  This year's event featured more than 20 companies and organizations spreading the word about waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting.

Lauren Cioffi, FoodCorps, demonstrating how to plant seeds properly

The City of Jackson was very excited to bring its annual Environmental Camp back for rising fourth and fifth grade students this summer. The camp was held July 16th – 20th at Jackson Public School’s 600 plus acre Environmental Learning Center on Highway 18. The goals of the environmental camp were to teach students the importance of conservation, preserving our natural environment, and good environmental stewardship practices that help minimize the impact of solid waste in their communities.

    News and information regarding the 2013 Mississippi College Recycling Summit to be held at the McGowan Workforce Training Center on the Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus July 18, 2013.

    Directions

    Northbound on I-55:

    Take Exit 105B, Ridgeland. You will have to turn right at the top of the exit and follow the common directions below.

    Southbound on I-55:

    Take Exit 105B, Ridgeland/Old Agency Road. At the top of the exit ramp, turn left. After crossing the interstate and passing the light for the entrance ramp, follow the common directions below.

    Common Directions:

    At the first red light, turn left onto Sunnybrook Road. Stay straight on Sunnybrook until the next red light and turn right onto Ridgeland Avenue. Turn left at the entrance adjacent to Fire Station #2 and follow to the northern-most parking lot. If parking is full in this parking lot, you may park in the lot adjacent to the McGowan Center on the west (left as following these directions) side of the building.

    We will be in Room 130 which is off of the center lobby.

    While we have attempted to plan the Summit in a manner that attendees could travel to and from the event in one day, we realize that some of you may prefer to come down and stay the night before.
