(JACKSON, MS) – The Mississippi Recycling Coalition (MRC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 Environmental Hero Awards honoring outstanding recycling programs and organizations in the state. Each year, MRC seeks nominations of organizations, businesses, agencies, schools, and local governments from around the State of Mississippi that have excelled in their recycling and environmental program efforts. The nominees are evaluated based on a number of criteria including the success of the recycling services/programs offered, the promotional and outreach efforts for recycling within the organization and/or the community served, the organization’s overall practices and efforts to improve environmental stewardship, the manner in which the recycling program has helped to improve a community or organization’s waste handling systems and the sustainability of the organization’s recycling practices and services. MRC is pleased to announce the 2014 Environmental Hero Award winners as follows:
The Jackson Chamber Partnership, Magnolia Data Solutions, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, and others, have partnered togother to offer the bi-annual Jackson Business E-Waste Collection Day. The event will be held from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Friday, April 24, 2015 at the Mississippi Farmers Market located at 929 High Street in Jackson, MS. There will be fee to recycle televisions ($15) and monitors ($5) to cover the costs of proper handling the hazardous components of these devices which can contain lead and mercury. (JACKSON, MS) — The Mississippi Recycling Coalition (MRC) is pleased to announce the award of three Mississippi School Recycling Grants for 2014-2015 School Year to schools in Ackerman, Winona and Southaven, Mississippi. These grants are offered to all public and private schools teaching grade K-12 students in the State of Mississippi. The awards include a $1,000 cash award and a complimentary 1-year membership to the Coalition for each school. A panel of MRC members evaluated each school grant application received based on the reuse, recycling and composting components of the program; the amount of student leadership and student participation in the recycling program; the emphasis on educating students on the benefits of recycling; and the community involvement, participation, and outreach components of the program. Other components considered included the creativity of the program, technical design of the program, sustainability of the program, and maximization of resources within the program.
The Mississippi Recycling Coalition is sponsoring our annual "Recycling Awareness Day" at the State Capitol with an afternoon ice cream social for our State Legislators and staff starting at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 in the First Floor Rotunda of the Capitol Building in Jackson, MS. This event is sponsored by MRC to help promote the benefits of a strong recycling industry in the state of Mississippi. We also encourage businesses, industries, and organizations that are involved in recycling to consider having an exhibit for the event. However, please note that space is limited in the Rotunda, and we will do our best to honor requests for exhibit space. The State Electronics Challenge (SEC) is hosting a free introductory webinar on February 26, 2015 from 1:00-2:00 PM CST. The SEC is a free program open to local, regional, tribal, and state governments, including public and private K-12 schools, colleges and universities, and non-profit organizations. The Challenge provides access to free technical assistance, tools, resources, and recognition while documenting the success of participating organizations.
